Visiting the Massaciuccoli Nature Reserve

Locals and visitors take advantage of the first rays of sunshine to indulge in long walks outdoors. What's better than trekking surrounded by natural scenery in a protected natural area?

The Chiarone Nature Reserve, also known as the Massaciuccoli Nature Oasis, is located in the municipality of Massarosa, just a few kilometers from Lido di Camaiore and the Grand Hotel & Riviera. In springtime, this green corner of Versilia becomes the protagonist of the migratory routes of numerous species of birds residing in the Oasis, which is worth witnessing at least once.

Whether you're a birdwatcher or simply look forward to spending moments of relaxation immersed in nature, a walk in the Massaciuccoli Park is an experience not to be missed.

A treasure trove of biodiversity dating back to the 1980s

The Chiarone Nature Reserve was officially inaugurated in 1979, with the birth of the Migliarino, San Rossore, and Massaciuccoli Park. In 1985, it became a protected area under the Italian League for Birdlife Protection (LIPU) management.

Since that time, LIPU's primary goal has been to preserve the unique biodiversity of the Oasis, making sure it has the best conditions for flora and fauna's survival and proliferation.

Many animal and plant species can be admired there: from marsh ferns to carnivorous plants, birds such as cormorants, herons and swallows, fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. An unmissable opportunity to immerse yourself in the sounds and colors that reign supreme in the unspoiled nature.

Walking through the Massaciuccoli Park

The Lipu Massaciuccoli Oasis offers numerous trails within the Chiarone Nature Reserve.

The main walk opens with a wooden path on stilts for about 800 meters amidst the reed and sedge thicket. From there you can branch off into other small trails that lead to the park's four observatories.

At the end of the stilted walk, the trail continues into the wet forest, where you can admire an additional observatory and a garden entirely dedicated to butterflies. It is a small island of plant biodiversity that can host and nurture these insects at all life cycle stages.

At this point, you can either decide to complete the loop and go back to the starting point or continue the walk until you reach the "Brilla," an old rice milling building currently used as the Park Visitor Center.

Treat yourself to a walk amid unspoiled nature. Book a stay at the Grand Hotel & Riviera in Lido di Camaiore and visit the Massaciuccoli Nature Oasis.
